Origins and Geographic Extent of Maya Civilization

The Mayan civilization is one of Mesoamerica's most remarkable ancient civilizations, with settlements dating as early as 1500 BCE when they began practicing agriculture. The civilization extended throughout present-day southern México, Guatemala, Belize, Northern El Salvador, and western Honduras. The Maya people specifically lived in Central America, which now consists of Yucatan, Guatemala, Belize, and southern México (the Chiapas and Tabasco provinces). The Maya Indians inhabited Mesoamerica, spanning five modern-day countries: México, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Mayan civilization occupied much of the northwestern part of the isthmus of Central America, from Chiapas and Yucatán in southern México.
